ecosystems seem not to like for there too much biomass with the same genetic signature; viruses are an embodiment of the primeval drive to anticipate competition by diversifying.  Lots of stuff they do makes sense in that lens.  That's why they show up in our genomes; that's where they're wanted.  So they're engines of selection AND mutation; very efficient, very bio.

my fantasy would be like a big translucent sphere, with a bunch of molecules inside it it, picture like each bead is a transclucent colored sphere with some text in it and some of the molecules are getting pulled toward the center of the sphere by little tug boats, and events are doinking out of the tugboats, and in the middle is all the information in your repos, like a cell i guess. work comes from outside the sphere and assembles itself into molecules in the outer parts, doinks around
 ok so one thing that ive noticed  is that there's an axis of self reflection that can bee too high or two low ie starting out, my polecats wouldnt start i needed gastown to figure itself out and troubleshoot itself but later on running many agents a transient infrastructure failure led to my faithful agents falling all over themselves trying to fix things diastrously and blowing away my database (it's backed up)
